Using a taxonomic approach guided by phylogenetic trees of detected giant virus genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes, we observed a depth-dependent structuring of divergent giant virus families, mirroring the dynamic physicochemical gradients in the stratified euphotic zone. Metabolic genes transcribed from giant viruses suggest a reworking of host metabolism, influencing organisms throughout a 200-meter gradient, from the surface down. In the final analysis, through the use of on-deck incubations reflecting a gradation of iron availability, we show that manipulating iron availability impacts the activity of giant viruses in the field.
